Be More

Another one of the messages from this past Sunday night that stood out to me was one by my friend, Jeremiah Johnson. He preached a message entitled, “Be More.” I got to thinking about what I could be more in life and I have developed my own message from starting with the base of “Be More”. Below are his notes from his message, I hope they will be a blessing and encourage you to “Be More” in 2019!

Be More

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 8:35-39

  • I don’t want to be average.
  • Average is as close to the bottom, as it is to the top.
  • Average is as close to last, as it is to first.

I think most have the idea that having victory come when we are living free of troubles, heartaches, trials, and afflictions.

This passage to me, tells us that we are more than conquerors in spite of what is thrown our way.

  • Vs. 35: tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword
  • Vs. 38: death, life, angels, principalities, powers, things present, things to come

Nothing is able to separate us from the love of God!!

Why can we be more this year? Not because of us, but look at vs. 37, we can be more than conquerors through Him!

If we will do everything through Him this year, we can be more!

We don’t become more than conquerors because we avoid these things, but rather because we triumph over them through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our pain and suffering is very real, but so is God’s purpose.

We must remember our plan for life and God’s plan for our life are rarely ever the same.

He puts us through things to:

  1. Refine our lives.
  2. Remake our lives.
  3. Realign our lives.

This process is painful but necessary to bring glory to Him.

God gets more glory from our lives being purified than if we lived how we want to live.

When do we pray most?

When do we read the Bible most?

When do we seek the Lord most?

  • The answer is universal, when we go through hard times.

Stop and think to do more!!

The Problem With Preaching Preferences

If you preach preferences, make sure that your preference doesn’t contradict the Word of God in any way. Because if your preference contradicts the Word of God, your preference is wrong.

The safest thing to do is leave your preferences out of preaching. Because when you preach preferences, you are preaching your word and not God’s.

Preach doctrine. Preach convictions. Preach standards. Preach the Word of God.

We will not all have the same preferences as Christians. We will disagree on some, agree on some and than others not even care about.

The thing about preferences is that they are just that, they are preferences. You can’t get mad at someone if they don’t follow or agree with your preference.

Here are some dangers of preaching preference.

  • You make the pulpit your soapbox for your word and not God’s Word.
  • You give your congregation opportunity to be confused between your word and God’s Word.
  • You give opportunity to cause strife and disagreement among the brethren.
  • You may cause people to have to choose to live by your word or by God’s Word.

So be careful when you preach, that you don’t preach preference over Biblical convictions.
