Withstand In The Evil Day

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

Ephesians 6:10-13

It is time for Christians to wake up and realize we are living in an evil day! We are living in a time when God is being thrown out of the courthouse, the schoolhouse, the family’s house and even the church house! We are living in a day when sin is so prevalent it is normal and accepted! We are living in an evil day where righteousness is frowned upon and wickedness is uplifted!

What happened to our will, our desire, our passion to stand and fight! Do you realize that your life and your child’s life is at stake here? Satan is doing everything he can to destroy Christianity and things of Christ, and we are sitting here allowing him to!

It is time we realize that we are in the fight of our lives! It is time that we stand up for what is right! Stand against what is wrong! Stop letting the world and the devil control what we do and say!

A few weeks ago, I wrote about doubling down on our Christianity. About becoming more zealous and fervent for what is right! The worldly crowd is getting louder and louder while we get quieter and quieter. I was thinking about this, are they getting louder because more and more ‘Christians’ are joining them? Just a thought…

I want to take one phrase from the verses above, “…that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day,…” Withstand means to stand up against:oppose with firm determination, to resist successfully; to be proof against: resist the effect of; to stop or obstruct the course of. We need to withstand in the evil day. We need to oppose, we need to resist, we need to stop and obstruct wickedness.

The preparation to withstand. To be able to withstand, we have to be prepared. How do we prepare? By putting on the armour of God. We see that God gives us the armour to put on in the following verses. This armour protects everything we need from head to foot. If we forget even one item, we are at risk of being defeated by Satan. He starts with the girdle of truth, that is why it is important to be honest in everything we say and do! He then goes to the breastplate of righteousness. The piece that covers your heart. We need to have a righteous and clean heart before God. The we are told to cover our feet with the gospel of peace, be a soul winner, be a witness for Christ. Then we are to take the shield of faith, realizing that we are not in this fight alone. Then the helmet of salvation. It doesn’t matter if you know everything about Christianity but don’t know the Christ that saves you. Without salvation, you will never be able to fight Satan like you should. Then we are to ourselves with the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. It is important to read, study, meditate and memorize the Bible as it is our only weapon of attack. Be prepared everyday to withstand the wiles of the devil, to be able to withstand Satan’s attack!

The performance of withstanding. When should we withstand? Easy, whenever wrong presents itself. We live in such a day when we are worried about who we will offend. Have we thought about how much we are offending God when we give into the world and into the ways of Satan. We have too many Christians sitting on the sidelines watching the fight, we need more Christians to stand up for Christ and get in the fight. The Christian life isn’t no tea party, it is a battle, it is a fight! Let’s not give into the Satan and his wicked ways! Let’s learn to say no! Let’s learn to turn from wickedness! Let’s learn to be bold about our faith and what is right according to the Bible. Whether you are standing alone or with a crowd, as long as you are standing for right, continue to stand!

The progression of withstanding. I was thinking about when would be the time to stop standing, and there is no time to stop standing. When we think we can stand no more, stand. When we think the fight is won, stand. Too often, we quit too soon, we give up, we stop…we have to keep pressing forward and continue fighting! We have to continue to progress in our fight, if we stop, we will regress. It is going to be tough. It is going to be hard, but that is when we need to rely on God to carry us through! We cannot fight the battle against Satan and the wickedness of this world without Christ! We need to progress and go forward in our walk with God, in our service for Christ! We need to withstand no matter what!

Be one who withstands in the evil day! Don’t give in or give up!

3 Lessons From Eleazar

Eleazar, a mighty man of David, knew what it was like to stand alone. Do you?

One of my friends owns a lawn service business. The last few weeks I have been doing some part-time work for him. Whenever I help, I’m always stuck doing the weed eating and edging. To me, I have the hardest, most important job. Someone can mow their yard but not do any edging or trimming around it and that will be the first thing that is noticed. Anyways, by the end of the day my hands hurt from weed eating, my right hand hurts to open and when it’s open, it hurts to close. This is from holding that weed-eater and squeezing the trigger that makes it run for long periods of time.

When this happens, I think of a verse from the Bible, II Samuel 23:10, “He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the Lord wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil.” This verse is from the story of David’s mighty men. The man in this was Eleazar. He was one of the top three guys in David’s army, he was the best of the best! One of the things that made these men great was that the stood and fought while everyone else ran. They weren’t afraid of the fight, they were willing to fight no matter the cost.

Eleazar fought all by himself and held off the Philistines. He gripped his sword so long and so hard that his hand clave to his sword. The word ‘clave’ is a past tense verb of the word ‘cleave’ which means to adhere firmly and closely or loyally and unwaveringly.

I see 3 lessons we can learn from Eleazar.

  • Eleazar was not going to let go of his sword no matter what happened. His sword was his only tool of offense and at the same time, his only tool of defense. If he dropped his sword, he was a goner, he would have been slain by those Philistines. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 The Word of God, the King James Bible, is our sword. It is our sword to fight Satan and sin and it also protects us from Satan and sin. Too many Christians, drop their sword in the battle and that is when they fall into the world and sin. Don’t let go of the Word of God, don’t let go of your sword, you need it every single day as we fight the world, the flesh, and the devil. We need the Word of God to protect us from every attack Satan brings our way! Cleave unto your sword, cleave unto the Word of God and don’t let go!!
  • Eleazar fought alone. In verse 9 of II Samuel 23, it says that “…the men of Israel were gone away.” The men who were supposed to fight, left. They ran, they turned their back on the battle, only Eleazar stood to fight. He fought, even though he was alone, he wasn’t going to let the enemy win the battle! In the Christian life, we may feel like we are in this battle alone. We may feel like everyone left us and deserted us. Continue to fight, continue to press on, don’t give up!
  • The Lord gave a great victory! Eleazar wasn’t worried about the outcome, he was going to fight and do what he was supposed to do. He even fought the battle alone. Because of this, the Lord did something great that day and gave him the victory! God brings victory, even when you least expect it! God is in the business of doing giving great victories when we least expect it.

After the Lord gave the victory, the Bible says the people returned only for the spoil, only for the rewards. This is typical in today’s society, one person puts in the work and others want to reap the benefit after the hard work is done. If you fight a battle alone, and God gives you the victory, don’t be upset if other people reap the reward also, God used you and you were used by God….that’s victory enough!

Be Sober, Be Vigilant

Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you tried, you were still failing?

Have you ever made a decision to do more for the Lord and felt like everything just got harder?

The devil isn’t after the one living in sin, enjoying the things of the world. He is after the child of God who is trying to live a life pleasing to God. He is after the one who decided to follow Jesus.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” I Peter 5:8

The word sober here in this verse doesn’t mean that you are not drunk or intoxicated. Sober, in this verse, means marked by temperance and moderation and seriousness. Peter is telling us that we need to be serious about this thing called Christianity because Satan is serious about destroying us.

He then tells us to be vigilant or watchful. We need to be watching out for any attacks that Satan brings! Satan will attack when we least expect it, that is why we need to stay vigilant!

There are no off days in Christianity. When you take an off day, you relax, you leave yourself vulnerable. Taking an off day in the Christian life is opening the door for Satan to attack you.

The devil will attack when decisions are made.

The devil will attack when direction is determined.

The devil is always ready to attack. He is walking, seeking those whom he can devour. His number one goal is to attack Christians and get them to stop serving God. Don’t be a casualty in the battle. Be sober, be vigilant!
